In other words&#8230; decision making requires both prediction and judgment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course, this presupposes that your decision-making process is reality-based and free from emotions<\/p>\n<p><a ref=\"magnificPopup\" href=\"http:\/\/www.executivecraft.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/bigstock-Surprised-431213.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-553 size-us_350_350_crop\" src=\"http:\/\/www.executivecraft.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/bigstock-Surprised-431213-350x350.jpg\" alt=\"decision making\" width=\"350\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.executivecraft.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/bigstock-Surprised-431213-350x350.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.executivecraft.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/bigstock-Surprised-431213-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.executivecraft.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/bigstock-Surprised-431213-600x600.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>like fear, a narrow focus, or an ego-based justification for the actions you choose to take.<\/p>\n<p>(Yes, these are hard truths that must be accepted to be a better leader.)<\/p>\n<p>Great decision makers, and great leaders will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Avoid emotional responses to challenging situations<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Focus on facts, without misreading what is actually going on<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Not turn molehills into mountains<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>View situations from multiple perspectives<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Set realistic goals and objectives for their team \u2013 and themselves<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>NOTE: While we all fear being wrong, <strong>fear of regret<\/strong> may have a greater negative influence on the decision-making process itself. The idea that you had a good choice and a bad choice, and regretting that you made the wrong one, is a huge deterrent to deciding. As a leader, you are the \u201cDecider\u201d, and you simply cannot afford to allow the potential for regret to slow down your process.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Reality Testing and Good Decision Making<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>In my coaching, as well as in my Webinar, I place a heavy emphasis on Reality Testing as a tool you can use to ensure that your decision-making process is grounded in the real world.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Accurately assess your environment, resources, and future trends to set realistic plans\/goals<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Stay objective, even if you do not like what you see<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Evaluate your strengths and weaknesses objectively<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Resist caving-in and self-defeating talk<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Gather external information to get a better understand of strengths and weaknesses: a.k.a feedback<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Stay aware of biases<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Anticipate and predict situations <\/strong>(&#171;Skate where the puck is going&#187;&#8212; Wayne Gretzky)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If your decision-making process is not reality based; if you give in to the fear of being wrong; if your process is inhibited by your ego; if you shirk your duty due to potential regret; if you have trouble seeing the forest for the trees (or vice versa), you would benefit from my training in emotional intelligence and reality-based decision making.<\/p>\n<p>Still have questions about Reality Testing? <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/app.acuityscheduling.com\/schedule.php?owner=14372214\">Click here for your FREE 50-Minute Discovery Call<\/a><\/strong>.","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to an article at the Harvard Business Review, good decision making requires a sense of two things: \u201cHow different choices change the likelihood of different outcomes and how desirable each of those outcomes is.
