When it comes to emotional intelligence and  leadership, it should be thought of as a leadership skill that requires,  even demands, long-term development.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\r\nTo explain it more fully; self-actualization refers to the need for \r\npersonal growth and development throughout one&#8217;s life. Developed in 1962\r\n by psychologist Abraham Maslow, it is the highest level of his \r\nhierarchy of needs; that is, the need for personal growth and discovery \r\nthat is present throughout a one\u2019s life. In other words, Self-actualized\r\n people are those who are fulfilled and doing all they are capable of.\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><br><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In Maslow\u2019s hierarchy of needs, human motivation is based on\r\nan individual&#8217;s ability to seek fulfillment and change through personal growth;\r\nand that, once a person\u2019s lower-level needs have been fulfilled or satisfied,\r\nthey would strive to satisfy higher-level needs.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>For example, from the bottom of the hierarchy upwards, the\r\nneeds are: <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Basic\r\nneeds:<\/strong> physiological survival and physical safety<\/li><li><strong>Psychological\r\nneeds:<\/strong> love, intimacy, and belonging<\/li><li><strong>Self-fulfillment\r\nneeds:<\/strong> esteem and achievement, plus self-actualization and fulfillment<\/li><\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Needs lower down in the hierarchy must be satisfied before\r\nindividuals can attend to needs higher up.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>So, once you are self-actualized, you&#8217;ve met your full potential\r\nas an individual \u2013 and yet, for Maslow \u2013 a person is always \u201cbecoming\u201d and\r\nnever remains static, relative to growth and development toward one\u2019s potential,\r\nor higher needs.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>7 Characteristics of\r\na Self-Actualized Person<\/strong><\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>A self-actualized person is someone who feels fulfilled and\r\nhas accomplished all the things they are capable of accomplishing in their life\r\nthrough personal growth and peak experiences, which are moments of deep meaning\r\nor emotion.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Here are seven characteristics of a self-actualized person:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Problem-centered\r\n(not self-centered)<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Perceive\r\nreality efficiently and can tolerate uncertainty<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Accept\r\nthemselves and others for Who they are<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Highly\r\ncreative<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Takes\r\nresponsibility and works hard<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Strong\r\nmoral\/ethical standards<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Honest\r\nand unpretentious<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>And yet, one may ask, if becoming fully self-actualized is\r\nimpossible, what is the point of trying?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>To answer this question, one must remember that Maslow saw\r\nhis hierarchy as a theory of personal motivation; that, to be a whole human\r\nbeing, each level of need must be satisfied and that the need to satisfy each\r\nsubsequent level would follow naturally (though subjective and cultural\r\ninfluences may apply).<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Stated simply: To live as a fully realized human being\u2026 What\r\none <em>can<\/em> be, one <em>must<\/em> be.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Self-Actualization as\r\na Leadership Skill<\/strong><\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The realization that you have reached or are working toward\r\nreaching your full potential can be quite stimulating, motivating you to reach\r\nfor even higher plateaus of excellence. The recognition of the same\r\ncharacteristic in others will enable you to motivate and lead them toward\r\ngreater goals and fulfillment.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>This is the type of self-actualization that motivates a\r\nleader to set higher goals for their teams; a level of emotional intelligence\r\nand leadership skills which, quite frankly, is found in far too few leaders.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Developing self-actualization as a leadership skill is an\r\nimportant part of the EQ-I model of emotional intelligence we focus on here.
